Latvian Mobile Telephone (LMT) is a mobile GSM/UMTS operator in Latvia.

History

LMT has operated on the mobile market since 1992, and is the first mobile network operator in the country.

The service was established as an operator of the NMT system. Within a couple of years of starting, the company has undergone rapid development. In January 1995, a GSM network has been in operation, and in December 1999 a dual 900/1800 MHz network was opened. From 1st September 2002, LMT's customers have been able to use data transmission services across all of Latvia. From December 2004, a UMTS 3G mobile communication network has been available to LMT users.

Alongside with its main service, voice transmission, LMT, like the leading mobile communication operators in other countries, has been paying more attention to services related to data transmission and wireless Internet access. LMT was the first company in Latvia to provide its customers with WAP services (giving access to the Internet using a mobile handset, without using a computer), "Mobile Bank", enabling customers to perform banking operations using a mobile handset, as well as GPRS services (data transmission, using data package commutation principle).

From 2005, LMT customers can use EDGE, giving a data transmission speed of up to 236 kbit/s using the existing GSM network. That is the highest available mobile data transmission speed in Latvia across the country, enabling LMT customers to use Mobile TV - allowing them to watch television broadcasts using their handsets. LMT actively participates in the activities of international telecommunications organizations GSM Association, UMTS Forum and ETSI.

Latvian Mobile Service has entered into roaming agreements with 385 mobile communication networks in 136 countries. From 2005, LMT's permanent subscribers, as well as OKarte users, can use their handsets not only in European countries, but also in other continents.

Since a part of LMT belongs to Telia Sonera, from July 11, 2008, due to an agreement between Telia and Apple, the iPhone will be legally available in the Baltic states and other Telia subsidiaries or co-properties, like LMT in Latvia, for example.
