Carman-Ainsworth High School is a high school located in Flint Township, Michigan. It is the only high school in the Carman-Ainsworth Community School district. CAHS is made up of approximately 45% Caucasian and 50% African-American students, although the remainder is made up of over 60 different nationalities. In the main entrance hallway hang flags representing each nationality of the school's population.

History

The current building was built in 1967 as Carman High School, replacing Dye, Utley and Hoover High Schools in the northern portion of the Carman-Ainsworth School District. Ainsworth High School had been built in 1962 as a replacement for Mandeville High School of Flint Township (built and dedicated in 1949), which became Mandeville Junior High School between then and 1986 and is now the site of Baker College. Carl Victor Page, the late pioneering computer science and artificial intelligence professor at Michigan State University and father of Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, Inc., was a 1957 graduate of Mandeville High School.

In 1986, the Carman-Ainsworth Community School District reorganized from a two-high school district to a one-high school district. Carman (Flint Township) and Ainsworth (Mundy Township) high schools merged, and since Carman High School was the largest high school building, it became Carman-Ainsworth High School. Ainsworth High School is now Carman-Ainsworth Middle School; the football stadium at the Middle School is home to Carman-Ainsworth's football and track teams. The baseball field is located at the high school and is coached by Mr. John "Fitz Daddy Dollars" Fitzko. The school uses the name Cavaliers for their sport teams, and its mascot is a form of Medieval Cavalier Horseman, with the notable fencing sword.

Both buildings underwent major renovations and expansions in recent years, including expanding the cafeteria area approximately double the size it use to be, with new chairs and tables during the summer after the 2007 school year. However, the school disposed of the snack bar area known as "The Commons" in order to expand the cafeteria. It was known as The Commons for the fact that it was in the center of the school and many of the main hallways either connected to it, or located near it, meaning it was "commonly" used.

Every year at CAHS, a student is recognized as student of the year. Although this student doesn't have to have a specific class standing, we are pleased to announce that for the previous three years, as well as the current one, Noor Haydar, class of 2008, has been awarded student of the year due to her academic, social, and community achievements.
