Toledo School for the Arts is a public
charter school in downtownToledo, Ohio . It was first sponsored by the Toledo Board of Education. In 2008 the school was chartered byBowling Green State University . TSA serves over 450 students from any school district in Ohio in Junior Division (6th, 7th and 8th grades), and Senior Division (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades).TSA succeeds with an arts-based, intergraded curriculum and is a vocational school offering programs in Music - Orchestra, Band, Guitar, Jazz, Pop, Vocal, Steel Drum and Piano; Theatre - acting, musical and technical, Dance - classical, jazz, modern and ethnic; Graphic Design and Visual Art - printmaking, oils, watercolor, computer design, sculpture and ceramics, and Business - Marketing, Personal Finance and school store operations.
First Friday is a monthly event for the public with performances, demonstrations and exhibits of student work. The highlight of each year is Kaleidoscope, a performance and exhibit from all the studio's and student solo work. Students also participate in an average 180 performances, appearances, shows, exhibits and concerts each year.
More opportunities are open to students through the school/community program called ARTners. This as a collaboration between the school and arts organizations in the area, including the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, The Toledo Opera, Toledo Repertoire Theatre, Toledo Jazz Society, Toledo Ballet Association and has had support from the Ohio Arts Council for many events and the Artist-in Residence" program.
The school is celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary in 2008-2009 with 10 months of events.
In 2004, TSA moved to a new building still located in uptown Toledo. They occupy half of the second floor, and all of the third and fourth floors. In 2008 the school expanded and added a floor to house the Junior Division (6th, 7th and 8th grades).
The school has reached and maintained a Ohio Department of Education school report card of "Excellent" for a number of years and has been recognized nationally for performance and service including New Leaders' Effective Practice Incentive Community (EPIC), identified by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the leading charter schools in the nation, National Title I Distinguished School Award (the first Charter School to receive the award), three time national finalist for the Grammy Signature Schools Award, and a Bronze Medalist in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 Best High Schools Search, placing the school in the top 6 percent of schools nationwide
