Performance Supervision System

A Performance Supervision System (PSS) is a software system used to improve the performance of a process plant. Typical process plants include oil refineries, paper mills, and chemical plants.
The PSS gathers real-time data from the process control system, typically a Distributed Control System. Using this data, the PSS can calculate performance metrics for process equipment, controls, and operations.
For metrics to be useful, they need to meet several criteria. They should be:
# Meaningful — Can be understood in practical terms;
# Measurable — Can be calculated from the available real-time data;
# Actionable — Based on the metric, you will know what to do.
In most Performance Supervision Systems, the metrics can be used to diagnose and prioritize opportunities with the equipment, controls, or operations. Repairs to the equipment can then be prioritized and managed by a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
