Annalena Tonelli

Annalena Tonelli (2 April 1943 - 5 October 2003) was an Italian trained lawyer who for several years did remarkable humanitarian work in the Horn of Africa. She generally worked with people with "special needs" and refugees.

She was born in Forlì, Romagna. In 2003 she won the Nansen Refugee Award which is given annually by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to recognize outstanding service to the cause of refugees.

In October 2003 she was assassinated at the tuberculosis hospital she started in Borama, Somaliland by a disgruntled former employee.
