USS "Rhode Island" (SSBN-740), an "Ohio"-class ballistic missile submarine, was the third ship of the
United States Navy to be named for
the 13th state. The contract to build her was awarded to theElectric Boat Division ofGeneral Dynamics Corporation inGroton, Connecticut on5 January 1988 and her keel was laid down on15 September 1988 . She was launched on17 July 1993 sponsored by Mrs. Kati Machthley, and commissioned on9 July 1994 , with Captain John K.
