"The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk" is volume 17 in the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories series. It was first published in 1940 by Grosset & Dunlap.

Plot synopsis

In the 1972 version, Nancy is going to New York from the Netherlands, when she sees someone spelling "-eware of Nancy Drew and Ne-" by using hand sign, Nancy only knows the hand signs for her name by hands. Her compainions Bess Marvin, George Fayne and herself meet Nelda Detweiler (another N.D.) Nancy receives a trunk, similar to her own, with the intitials N.D. on it. It doesn't belong to Nelda either. Nancy must try to solve why people are trying to steel the trunk and harm her. With the help of her friends, and Rod Havelock, she is able to solve the mystery. While Nancy is picking up clues to fit the puzzle, she needs to be cautious about her main suspect Otto August and his friend. The mysterious person wants the Trunk back so they threaten all of Nancy's friends so they can get the trunk back. nancy and her friends wonder, what is so special in this trunk to make people threaten them. When they looked inside of the trunk in was Disguises. They had beards hats suits and many more things to disguise people. After that they were all starttled by a knock at the door. Luckily it was only another friend. They get back to the trunk anf find jewels. There were bags of them hidden inside of the bottom the trunk. The people who threatened them threw Nancy and Nelda overboard! Thank heavens they were saved. After some more sluething they put all of their predictions together and came up with whos trunk it was Otto August, who also framed Nelda for stealing Jewelry.
