AUSCAR (Australian Stock Car Auto Racing) was the Australian counterpart of the American motor racing series NASCAR, starting in 1986 and continuing until 2001. The cars were designed to race on the paved oval tracks at Calder Park Thunderdome and Adelaide International Raceway, but were also raced on road courses. The cars were not pure space frame chassis, but were built on Australian Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon road car chassis. As a result, AUSCARs are right-hand-drive, and race clockwise at ovals, compared to the left-hand-drive anticlockwise NASCAR car. Notable drivers include, Brad Jones, [Marshal Brewer] ,Terry Whyhoon, Leigh Watkins, who was the only driver to win the championship in a Ford falcon .
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the V8 Supercars and financial difficulties, AUSCAR was shut down and the drivers dispersed into other national racing series. You can now be given a ride of a life time in an AUSCAR on the Goodyear Thunderdome at Calder Park with Fastrack racing and or be instructed by Championship drivers Marshal Brewer and Leigh Watkins in a drive session.
