CTV Northern Ontario ) is a Canadian television station, broadcasting inSault Ste. Marie, Ontario . It is an O&O of CTV. The station's signal also reaches the eastern portion of theUpper Peninsula of Michigan , and the station can be seen over the air as far south asGaylord, Michigan .CHBX is essentially a semi-satellite of CICI in Sudbury. It airs the same programming as CICI at all times, except some commercials and regional segments on the news.
The station began broadcasting on the weekend of
September 23 ,1978 as CKCY-TV. It was owned byHuron Broadcasting along with CBC affiliateCJIC-TV , and was a sister station of an AM radio outlet with the same call letters. It was originally scheduled to begin transmitting September 20, but was delayed by transmitter problems. Prior to the sign-on of CKCY, CTV programming was available in Sault Ste. Marie on cable from Sudbury's CICI. CICI returned to the cable dial in the Soo for a time in the 1980s.It adopted the current CHBX call sign in 1986, when the radio station was sold to
Mid-Canada Radio . In 1990, Huron sold CHBX and its CBCtwinstick CJIC toBaton Broadcasting , which merged them into the MCTV system. Baton became the sole corporate owner of CTV in 1997, and sold CJIC to the CBC in 2002.CHBX also broadcasts on channel 7 in Wawa.
