On November 3 2004, Progressive Rail leased a section of former Wisconsin Central Railway from the Canadian National Railway to be operated by Wisconsin Northern. On November 23 2004, WN's operations were extended with the lease of additional Union Pacific Railroad (formerly Chicago and North Western Railway) tracks. Interchange of traffic for both track segments takes place with Union Pacific at Norma, Wisconsin, a northern section of Chippewa Falls.
Major commodities handled include: resins, scrap materials, lumber, logs, fertilizer, steel, feed grade grains, and tallow.
