Route 746 runs over 10 miles, between U.S. 1-301 and the terminus of Route 618 in southeastern Chesterfield County, Virginia. Originally the entire, torturous route was known as the Enon Church Road. Today, the lower half of Route 746 (which has an interchange with I-95) is officially called Ruffin Mill Road.
Ruffin Mill Road retains a character starkly in contrast to the highly-populated county containing it. Said to be an old Indian trail, the precarious road twists through dense forest, bordering marshland along the nearby Appomattox River. At many points, the road curves sharply (close to 180 degrees) and is barely wide enough for two small cars in either direction. For this reason, Ruffin Mill Road has long been popular with local teenagers for a 'scary night out'. Longtime locals have dubbed it "snake road"; its supporting terrain humorously referred to as "gator country".
Another part of this road's local lore is a haunted house story. The tale has varied slightly over time, but apparently still persists to this day.
