A placeholder is a general term, sign, or symbol which is used in place of a specific unknown or irrelevant term or value. Placeholder may refer to:

* Placeholder name, words that can refer to unknown objects or people
* Free variables and bound variables, in disciplines involving formal languages, particularly mathematics and logic
* Metasyntactic variable, in computer science
* Lorem ipsum, in publishing and graphic design
