Route
Burwood Highway is a primary route between Melbourne and the eastern suburbs, and the area around Belgrave. It begins at its junction with
Monash Freeway (orCitylink if travelling north)as a four lanesingle carriageway , which is often clogged as a result of trams travelling along the roadway for much of the route. However, this part of the route is usually signed asToorak Road . AfterWarrigal Road , the highway widens to become a six lanedual carriageway , the median with trams tracks, carrying the Route 75 service to Vermont. A few kilometres before Belgrave, the highway narrows again to a single carriageway, its route, number changing from continues as Belgrave-Gembrook Road.Services along the Highway
The highway is known for the Route 75 tram line which runs down the median of the highway from Burwood to Vermont South. The 732 bus route also runs along the majority of the highway connecting Box Hill with Upper Ferntree Gully and provides a fast link between the Vermont South tram terminus with Knox City. The highway features many shopping centres including the first Kmart built in Australia, Vermont South Shopping Centre, Knox City Shopping Centre along with its sister outdoor area Knox O-Zone and Mountain Gate Shopping Centre.
