It is run over a distance of 2,100 metres (approximately 1 mile 2½ furlongs) atLongchamp Racecourse and takes place annually in April.It was first run in 1878 as the Prix du Nabob, named after the racehorse
The Nabob , runner-up in the 1854Ascot Gold Cup and later a successful sire in France. The race was given its present title in 1896, in memory ofAlfred de Noailles , a leading figure in French racing who died the previous year.For many years it was one of five trial races for the
Prix du Jockey Club , each of which, with the exception of thePrix Lupin , held specific conditions based on the nationality of a horse's sire or dam. The Prix Noailles was restricted to horses whose dams' sires were born outside France, a condition which continued until 1968. From 1943 to 1946 the race merged with another of the trials, thePrix Daru , and was run as the Prix Daru-Noailles. The 1943 race took place at Tremblay and the 1944 and 1945 races at Maisons-Laffitte.Originally contested over 2,500 metres, the distance was cut to 2,400 metres in 1942, and to 2,100 metres in 1944. From 1947 it was run over 2,200 metres, reducing to its present length in 2005.
