History
Still 1991, when it was separated with a local referendum, Monserrato was a district of Cagliari. The other 3 municipalities separated from Cagliari in this decade were Quartucciu (separated in 1983), Elmas (separated in 1989) and Selargius (separated in 1991). Still 1995 [2] it is part of the new instituted Cagliari Metropolitan Area.

Monserrato borders the following municipalities: Cagliari, Quartu Sant'Elena, Quartucciu, Selargius, Sestu.
