WDZY is a Childrens formatted broadcast radio station affiliated with Radio Disney.

WDZY is licensed to Colonial Heights, Virginia, serving Richmond/Petersburg. WDZY is owned and operated by Walt Disney, Inc.

History

During the 50s, 60s, 70s, and early 80s it was known as WPVA-AM and from 1972 through 1982 it simulcasted with a sister FM, WPVA-FM (now separately owned WKHK). It did a Top 40 format in the 50s, but later became a country station in the 1960s. In the 80s it went through several owners and formats. The first was a call letter change to WYNT, featuring a variety based popular music format. In 1983, the WPVA call letters returned, subsequent formats included talk, Gold based Adult Contemporary, Classic Soul (all as WPVA), Big Band (as WSTK) Oldies (as WZOU) and finally affiliating with Radio Disney in the late 90s as WDZY. Disney later purchased the station. The station's original offices and studios were in Petersburg, but have since been moved to Richmond.

Transmitter and Reception

AM 1290 transmits from a single tower at the northeast corner of Temple Ave and Conduit Rd in Colonial Heights, Virginia, approximately 2.5 miles from its former studio. While the studio facilities were based in Petersburg, a microwave link carried programming from the studio to the transmitter site. Now that the studios have been moved to Richmond, 25 miles away, it is unclear how the transmitter is fed today.

WDZY can be heard during the day as far away as Norfolk, Virginia which is 91 miles away and Washington, DC which is 120 miles away.
