Sheldon was elected in the 1986 Alberta general election for the Alberta Liberal Party defeating Progressive Conservative Brian Lee. Sheldon was part of a group 4 Liberal MLAs elected that election who brought the party back to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the first time since 1969.

Sheldon was elected to a second term in the Legislative Assembly in 1989. He died in 1992 from Lymphoma Cancer.

In April 2008, the Calgary Health Region opened the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre in honor of this great man. At opening the centre contained an Urgent Care Centre, a Diagnostic Imaging department and the Southern Alberta Clinic.

Legacy

An 8 story medical facility is under construction in Calgary, and has been named the Sheldon M. Chumir Centre.
