Founded as the North Western Branch of the British Astronomical Association in 1892, its name and emphasis changed when it became a local society in 1903.

Meetings
The society normally meet every Thursday evening in the Godlee Observatory. However, these meetings are currently taking place in room H8 of the Sackville Street Building while the observatory is refurbished.[1]
