There have been sporadic campaigns, attempts and revolts in past centuries, though the campaign for Liberation, as it has been called subsequently, began in around the 20th century.the dictator Salazar imposed his version of colonial rule in Goa from late twenties. Strict sensorship effectively eliminated the vocal or published word that went against the interest of the Portuguese. The discontent erupted in 1946. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia who came to Goa for a rest at his friend's Juliao Menezes house in CHINCHINI was shocked to know of the strict censorship in Portuguese Goa. Fiery Dr. Lohia decided to defy the law, which he did in a public meeting on 18th June 1946. He was arrested. A short lived mass movement agaist Portuguese domination followed. Leader after leader offered Satyagraha; were arrested and deported to Portugal and were held in the PENICHE jail in Portugal. Portuguese rule in Goa ended with a military action by the Indian army on December 16, 1961.
