James Phelan, Jr.

James Phelan, Jr. (b. December 7 1856, Aberdeen, Mississippi - d. January 20 1891) was a United States Congressman from Tennessee.

He attended various schools, eventually receiving his Ph.D from the University of Leipzig in 1878. He married Mary Early, with whom he had three children. He became the owner of the Memphis, Tennessee newspaper "The Avalanche" in 1881, and was admitted to the Tennessee bar that same year.

In 1887, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, and served in that body until his death, in Nassau, Bahamas, in 1891. During his term in the House, he published his book, "History of Tennessee", in 1888.

He died, aged 34, and is buried in Memphis.
