The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies (CMSS) at the
University of Calgary is part ofCanada 's Department of National Defence nation-wide security and defence forum research centres. Currently it has over 50 students at both the Masters andPhD level with 33 fellows, 18 research associates, 29 alumni and 5 staff members. The CMSS mission is to promote and develop excellence in military, security and defence studies.David Bercuson is the director of the CMSS. The CMSS offers a J.L. Granatstein Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The CMSS is affiliated with the Arctic Institute of North America.Programs
CMSS offers four degrees: MSS thesis-based, MSS course-based, MSS Co-op and Special Case PhD. An application to hold a formal PhD program within CMSS was approved by the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Science. Masters in Strategic Studies course based students have a Co-op program for Master's students in which they work in a security and defence related job for eight months. The Masters program is currently completed by thesis, course work or co-op and the PhD program is by Special Case only (however, this will change in the coming years).
History
The Strategic Studies Program was established in 1981. It is part of the Department of National Defence's nation-wide network of Security and Defence Forum (SDF) research Centres, a network of Centres specializing in defence and security studies across Canada. It was renamed the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies in 1999. The CMSS, part of the Faculty of Social Science at the
University of Calgary , draws from external departments such asEconomics ,Anthropology ,Political Science ,Geomatics andHistory . The CMSS is affiliated with theCanadian Forces ,Department of National Defence and theCalgary business community.Publications
The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies publishes international conference proceedings, books by fellows and the Calgary Papers in Military and Strategic Studies. The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies (CMSS) at the University of Calgary and the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute (CDFAI) sponsor the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies.
