Centre for Newfoundland Studies

The Centre for Newfoundland Studies is a section of the Memorial University of Newfoundland library completely devoted to the collection and storage of Newfoundland related articles and maps. Founded in 1966 by [http://www.mun.ca/mundays/80s/tribute86.html Agnes O'Dea] it is now home to many rare manuscripts, maps and articles related to the people and history of Newfoundland and Labrador. To date, it houses the largest collection of Newfoundland material found anywhere. There are more than 20,000 biography files and individual files of newspaper clippings on every community in the province and in total it has in excess of 70,000 volumes in its collection.

Notable rare collection

* William Cormack's 1822 map of the interior of Newfoundland with his hand written notes and route.
* Ramusio map of 1556, chart created in Venice for navigators who sailed along the Newfoundland coast.
* A 27 page poem by George Cartwright written in 1792 entitled "Labrador: A Political Epistle". One of the first pieces of poetry known to be written about Labrador.
* Robert Hayman's Quodlibets, calling for Englishmen and women to colonize Newfoundland. It was composed at Bristol's Hope in the 1620s, considered the first work of literature written in the New World.
* Book by William Vaughan entitled "The Golden Fleece" written in 1626 in which he talks about his attempt to colonize the Southern Avalon from Calvert to Placentia Bay and Trepassey. The book also contains the 1617 map by John Mason.
* Five lithographs by William Spreat depicting the St. John's Court House, Colonial Building, Government House, the Bank of British North America and the Customs House, Newfoundland|Customs House.
* A Lester Barbour collection of World War I embroidered postcards created by women from Belgium and France and sold to Allied troops during the war.
* CODCO ideas book and publicity photo.
* The December 11, 1948 Terms of Union between Newfoundland and Canada.
