1993 film , it is the 20th installment in theToho studio'sGodzilla series, it was directed by Takao Okawara with special effects byKoichi Kawakita . It was written by Wataru Mimura.Plot
In
1992 a few months after Godzilla battled and defeated Mothra and Battra, the JSDF lifts the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah from the ocean. Using the armor and robotic technology that the Futurians gave them they createMechagodzilla , a super weapon to finally killGodzilla .On a mission to an island in the Pacific, a Japanese team comes across a dinosaur egg. They take the egg which somehow attracts Godzilla and
Rodan , both fighting ferociously with Godzilla nearly killing Rodan with his atomic breath. The egg is taken back to Japan where it hatches into Baby Godzilla. Godzilla appears inKyoto to rescue his son, but Mechagodzilla battles Godzilla, getting the King to the ground, and nearly victory. Suddenly Godzilla does his nuclear reverse which shuts down MechaGodzilla's systems. Godzilla angrily shoves MechaGodzilla aside but completely disregards his doppleganger and continues searching for his son, though he is hidden by the main human characters in a room that blocks off his psychic mind waves. Godzilla gives up and returns to his ocean home, but not before laying waste to everything in his way in frustration.Tests on Baby Godzilla reveal that he has a second brain in his hips that control his legs and tail. The JSDF assume that Godzilla has a similar body-structure. They decide to use Baby Godzilla to bait Godzilla to them and use the G-Crusher, a system designed to destroy Godzilla's second brain, on the mutant dinosaur. Instead Rodan, now more powerful, with red scaly skin, and having a uranium atomic breath which he got as a result of being exposed to Godzilla's own atomic breath, is attracted to the bait as well and fights the JSDF attack aircraft Garuda and defeats it. He turns his attention to Mechagodzilla and attacks, losing horribly, being no match to the super weapon though he does disable MechaGodzilla's right eye laser cannon. Godzilla then shows up and starts to battle Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla combines with Garuda and turns into Super-Mechagodzilla and uses the G-Crusher on Godzilla. Godzilla is paralysed, but is revived when Rodan sacrifices himself and transfers his remaining life energy to Godzilla. Godzilla uses his newly aquired Red Spiral Atomic Breath to destroy Super-Mechagodzilla. Godzilla then finds his son, Baby Godzilla and they both swim off into the ocean to find a new home.
Trivia
* The original ending for "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II" was that Mechagodzilla killed Godzilla, therefore ending the VS series. But, Godzilla transfers his energy to Baby Godzilla who grows into an adult Godzilla. This new Godzilla would be used in Tristar's version but Sony decided that they wanted to make a standalone film of their own. Instead, the scenario was used two years later in "
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah ".*
Ishiro Honda was slated to direct the film, but died in early 1993.* Another ending considered is that Godzilla is killed by Mechagodzilla, but not before damaging the ship Garuda. The nuclear engine inside irradiates Godzilla, giving him new strength to defeat his mechanical clone.
* In the release of the international dub of the movie they referred to
Rodan by his Japanese name, Radon.
