Veliyam

Veliyam is a village in Kerala, India. It is situated near Kottarakara in the Kollam district of Kerala.

Veliyam Bhargavan is a leading politician who was born and brought up in Veliyam Padinjatinkara. The famous film star Murali was born and brought up in this village at a place called Kudavattur. There are many more well known people from this village.

This village is gifted with Temples,Mosque,Church,paddy fields, rock hills and rivers makes it more beautiful. Paddy and Coconut were major cultivation here and is given way to Rubber as in most part of Kerala. Though majority of the people are farmers,this village has a very good percentage of literacy .

The famous temples in this village are Veliyam Temple, Subhramanya Swamy Temple, Palakkottu Temple. There are a lot more small temples in this village.

A.Sreedhara Menon briefly narrates the historical importance of this place in his book 'kerala history'. A king named "VELIYAN" ruled this place , nearly 2500 years back. Later this place known as VELIYAM.

Veliyam is famous for the Nationalised Political Parties in India Including Communist Party and Congress . The people are extremely politicised long ago.Veliyam gave birth to many political leaders.Veliyam Damodaran was the most popular polititian in this place.He was the one who laid the foundation for communism in this region.He always worked for the lower class.The present generation might not be aware of his contributions.
