Vilém Mathesius (
August 3 ,1882 –April 12 ,1945 ) was a Czech linguist and literary historian, a scholar of English andCzech literature . His brother wasBohumil Mathesius .In 1912 he became the first professor of English language and literature at the Charles University. In 1926 he co-founded the
Prague Linguistic Circle ("Pražský lingvistický kroužek"). He engaged ingrammar ,phonology and stylistics of English and Czech languages. He was further interested in generallinguistics , language culture and general cultural issues. His works aboutword order andsyntax can be labeled as pioneer projects.Main works
