Civitella Paganico borders the following municipalities: Campagnatico, Cinigiano, Montalcino, Monticiano, Murlo, Roccastrada. The name of the municipaly does not correspond to a town: the municipal seat is located in the frazione of Civitella Marittima, 33 km from Grosseto. Historically, it was part of the Ardengheschi's possessions; later, it was under the Republic of Siena and, from the mid-16th century, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
