"American Art" is a peer-reviewed journal covering all aspects of America's visual heritage from colonial to contemporary times. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the journal investiagtes specific artists and art objects, as well as the cultural factors that have shaped American art over three centuries.

While the fine arts are the primary focus, all aspects of the nation's visual culture are covered, including popular culture, public art, film, electronic multimedia, and decorative arts and crafts. The journal embraces all methods of investigation to explore America's diverse artistic legacy, from traditional formalism to analyses of social context.

The journal is published by the University of Chicago Press and was formerly known (until 1991) as "Smithsonian Studies in American Art".
