List of United Kingdom censuses

List of United Kingdom censuses

The census in the United Kingdom is decennial, that is, held every 10 years, though there is provision in the 1920 Census Act for it to be held every five years. There are actually three censuses in the United Kingdom - in England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, though they are often coordinated. The census records relate to the occupants of each household on the date given below:

*United Kingdom Census 1801 - 10 March Tuesday
*United Kingdom Census 1811 - 27 May Monday
*United Kingdom Census 1821 - 28 May Monday (first census to include Ireland)
*United Kingdom Census 1831 - 30 May Monday
*United Kingdom Census 1841 - 6 June Sunday
*United Kingdom Census 1851 - 30 March Sunday
*United Kingdom Census 1861 - 7 April Sunday
*United Kingdom Census 1871 - 2 April Sunday
*United Kingdom Census 1881 - 3 April Sunday
*United Kingdom Census 1891 - 5 April Sunday
*United Kingdom Census 1901 - 31 March Sunday

Because the 100-year closure rule was established after the 1911 census, it is now partially available through The National Archives using the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The 1911 census will become more and more accessible until January 2012 when the entire census is due to be officially released. Other censuses after 1911 will not be affected by the Freedom of Information Act, as when these censuses were taken, the 100-year closure rule was already in place.
