Terry Daniher (born 15 August 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League.

Nicknamed "T.D", he was the first of four brothers (Neale, Chris and Anthony) to play for Essendon, after beginning his VFL/AFL career with South Melbourne.

Early life

Daniher was born in Ungarie, New South Wales, the eldest of the four Danihers to play football, and was one of eleven children in the Daniher household. During his childhood, Daniher represented Ungarie Football Club. In fact, as a child, Daniher played both football and rugby league on the same weekend.

Career

Daniher was recruited by South Melbourne in 1976, from Ungarie. At the end of 1977, Daniher played his nineteenth and last game for the Swans, against Richmond, in a losing elimination final. During the off-season, he was traded to Essendon in exchange for midfielder Neville Fields.

Essendon

Daniher began his Essendon career the following year, quickly distinguishing himself as a strong, good-marking full-forward with a long kick and a very good lead. By 1982, Daniher was renowned as a utility player (one who can play either forward or back). In 1983, Daniher became the captain of the Bombers, a post he would hold until 1988, or for 127 games. That year, Daniher was named VFL Players Association MVP, an honour now known as the Leigh Matthews Trophy, and also played in his first VFL Grand Final, against Hawthorn. Essendon lost that game, but would be back in the grand final the next year. This time, Essendon came from 23 points down at three-quarter time to win in one of the most memorable Grand Finals ever. The next year, Daniher was again captain when Essendon thrashed Hawthorn by 78 points. Daniher's career at Essendon spanned 294 games, including 127 as captain, and ended after the 1992 season.

In 1990 the four Daniher brothers made VFL/AFL history when they played in the same side.

In 1998 Daniher was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Coaching

Daniher has held various senior and assistant coaching positions since his retirement. Daniher was the senior coach of the Essendon VFL team from 1999 until 2002, before moving to the Collingwood Football Club as assistant coach in 2003 and then on to St Kilda in 2004 and 2005. Since 2006, Daniher has been an assistant coach to Denis Pagan at the Carlton Football Club.
