Ismail started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 1980, but did not get serious until he moved from Amazonas state,in Brazil to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1984 and met his master
Carlson Gracie . Wallid was one of the few fighters in the Carlson Gracie Team who stayed by his side until the day he passed away in 2006. He soon began competing in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and was several times Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion.He defeated in BJJ tornaments four members of the famous Gracie family, Ralph Gracie, Renzo Gracie, Ryan Gracie and Royce Gracie. Fighting with the latter, he was the only one who accepted the conditions proposed for this fight which were no points and no time limit.The fight took four minutes and fifty three seconds and he defeated Royce with his famous clock choke.Wallid Ismail was the first Brazilian jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts athlete to become a professional fighter in this sport because of his specially dedicated training - he had many sponsors and didn't have to teach or have another job as all of the other fighters had and also brought mixed martial arts back into the Brazilian Media in 1991 when he faced another famous kind of martial arts in Brazil called Luta Livre. This event is legendary in Brazil, and it was broadcasted on the biggest network television in Brazil, the Globo channel. This changed the face and public awareness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Brazil.
