David Lawrence McKay (born
March 14 ,1950 inVancouver ,British Columbia ) is a Canadian formermajor league baseball player and a longtime coach at the MLB level. As an active player, he was aninfielder for theMinnesota Twins ,Toronto Blue Jays (where he was a played for maiden edition of the Jays as an expansion team) and theOakland Athletics . He is the father ofCody McKay .The 2008 season marked McKay's 25th consecutive campaign as a major league coach, a tenure spent with two teams: the Athletics (1984-95) and
St. Louis Cardinals (since 1996). Although almost every year of his coaching career (including his current post) has been spent as a first-base coach, he spent 1988 as the strength and conditioning coach of the A's. He andJosé Canseco co-authored a book on proper weight training techniques for baseball players.He has been associated with
Tony LaRussa since the midpoint of the 1986 season, and has coached on five pennant-winning and two world championship teams — the 1989 Athletics and the 2006 Cardinals.He is a member of the
