Wilbur Hoolick (Lewis) is the apprentice of a barber who doesn't have enough money for train fare. He pretends to be an eleven-year-old in order for him to purchase a ticket for half price. Meanwhile a valuable diamond has been stolen and the thief (Burr) hides it in Hoolick's pocket without his knowledge.
Once on the train, Hoolick gets the impression that the thief is a jealous husband and he hides from him in the compartment of Nancy Collins (Lynn), a teacher at a private girl's school. Feeling sorry for Hoolick travelling alone, she allows him to stay in her compartment for the duration of the train ride.
During a stop-over, another teacher, Gretchen Brendan (Foch), boards the train and finds out that Collins is sharing her compartment with a 'man'. Brendan hurries to the school to let Collins' fiancee, Bob Miles (Martin), in on this news. In order to protect Collins' job and reputation, Hoolick must continue the charade and he accompanies "Aunt Nancy" to school. The jewel thief follows them in order to retrieve the stolen diamond.
Along the way, Hoolick falls in love with Collins, although she still thinks of him as a little boy. Eventually the thief retrieves the stolen jewel and a chase ensues. In the end the jewel thief is captured and Hoolick's identity is revealed.
