football (soccer) club based in theLondon Borough of Redbridge . Prior to July 2004 the club was known as Ford United F.C. The new name was chosen to help associate the club more with the area where they are based, and less with theFord Motor Company .They should not be confused with the former
Redbridge Forest F.C. , a predecessor of the currentDagenham & Redbridge F.C. , though both come from the borough of Redbridge inGreater London .History
The club's roots lie in the car industry which has long been a staple of the economy in East London and in Essex. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2007/09/14/nl_redbridge_feature.shtml BBC London: Your Team A-Z: Redbridge F.C.] ]
The club was previously known as Ford United F.C., which dated from a
1959 merger between two older clubs, Ford Sports (Dagenham) and Briggs Sports, both of which were founded in1934 . Up untilWorld War II , the latter actually began life as Briggs Motor Bodies F.C. and entered a team in theLondon League under that name between 1935 and1951 .As Ford United F.C., they performed well in the Aetolian League winning the title twice [ [http://www.sheppeyunited.com/Season1959-60.htm Sheppey United: Aetolian League - 1959/60] ] [ [http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1961AETO1%201961-1962&f=1 1950-1980 League Table Archive Search: Aetolian League - Division 1 - 1961-1962] ] and finishing runners up once. Sky Sports as sponsors, rescuing the Club.New manager, ex Wimbledon and Bolton Wanderers striker
