Etymology and Meaning

The literal translation of the name "Ismail" is along the lines of "Heard by Allah" or "God has heard" and it refers to the yearning of Ibrahim and his wife, Sarah, to have a child. Ismaïl's mother, Hagar was the handmaiden of the Princess. Muhammad, a descendant of Ismaïl who was sent the Qur'an by Allah, became the final messenger and so the name "Ismail" is often taken to mean "the fulfillment of a divine promise resulting from prayer being heard".

There are a number of people by this name:
*Ismaïl, an Islamic prophet, son of Ibrahim
*Isma'il Pasha (1830–1895), Wali and khedive of Egypt, also known as "Ismail the Magnificent"
*Ismail I, the founder of the Safavid dynasty
*Ismail Samani, Amir of the Samanid
*Mawlay Ismail Ibn Sharif of Morocco (1645/46-1727)
*Ismail bin Muhammad Ali (1795 – October 1822), 19th century Turkish general and son of Muhammad Ali of Egypt.
*İsmail Enver, Turkish military officer, leader of the Young Turks and leader of the Ottoman Empire during both of the Balkan Wars and World War I.
*Ismail Kadare, Albanian novelist.
