- Joseph Polchinski
Joseph Polchinski (born on
May 16 ,1954 in White Plains,New York ) is aphysicist working onstring theory . He graduated fromCanyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Arizona in1971 , obtained his B.S. degree fromCaltech in1975 , and his Ph.D. from theUniversity of California, Berkeley in1980 . After postdoctoral positions atSLAC (1980-82) andHarvard (1982-84) he was a professor at theUniversity of Texas at Austin from1984 to 1992. Since1992 he has been a professor at theUniversity of California, Santa Barbara and a permanent member of theKavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara.Polchinski is the author of the two volume textbook, "String Theory", published in
1998 . Among his contributions totheoretical physics ,D-branes are the best known. In2008 he won theDirac Medal for his work insuperstring theory .Bibliography
