Tsimiroro is the name of a large
oil field in the onshoreMorondava Basin ofMadagascar . It is estimated to contain as many as 8 billion barrels of heavy oil. The oil is found in the Isalo and Amboloando formations. The field is located south of theBemolanga ultra heavy oil field and south of the town ofMorafenobe .Madagascar Oil is current license holder of the Tsimiroro field. It describes the field as being a heavy oil field with a significant volume ofoil in place . It gives the oil resources as:The Isalo I formation has an additional estimated volume of oil in place of 877 mmbbls.
The oil is 14-16ºAPI with low
sulphur (<0.4%), lowvanadium but someiron . The field, 100 km (60 mi) from the coast is at 100-300 m (300-1000 ft) depth. 61 wells have been drilled on Tsimiroro’s c. 70 km² (30 sq mi) core area to date. Madagascar Oil is currently executing a pilot project on Tsimiroro using steam recovery. Minimal historic cold flow notwithstanding, this project led to the first oil production ever in Madagascar in March 2008.Notes
