Intensive pronoun

Intensive pronoun

= In English =

An intensive pronoun is a pronoun used to add emphasis to a statement; for example, "I did it myself." English intensive pronouns use the same form as reflexive pronouns. An intensive pronoun is different from a reflexive, because you can take the pronoun out and the sentence still makes sense. Ex, I will do it myself. You can delete myself, and the sentence still makes sense.

In other languages

In Spanish, a pro-drop language, the way of emphasising who performs an action is to say the pronoun after the verb. Following the above example, "I will do it myself" is rendered "Lo haré yo."

French follows a similar pattern to English, giving "Je vais le faire moi-même."
