Evelyn Danzig Levine (
January 16 ,1902 -July 26 ,1996 ) was an American songwriter best known for writing the music to for the popularfolk song , "Scarlet Ribbons", which was recorded byHarry Belafonte ,Jo Stafford ,Perry Como ,Dinah Shore ,Joan Baez ,The Kingston Trio ,Wayne Newton ,Danny Thomas andSinéad O'Connor , among many others.Nana Mouskouri also sang it in French, under the title "Rubans Rouges".The song came to life in 1949, at Danzig's home in
Port Washington , New York, where she collaborated withlyricist Jack Segal . She went on to collaborate with Segal on many other songs, including "Where I May Live With My Love", "The Wonder of Wonderful You", "When a Warmhearted Women Loves a Cold-hearted Man" and "Midnight in Manhattan".In the 1930s, she had her own radio program out of
New York City , called "Treble and Clef". She also wrote twooperas , "Hester" and "Three for Tonight", for Harry Belafonte.Danzig, the youngest of six children born to Ethel and Morris Danzig (from
Danzig ), was born inTexas . She was the sister ofAllison Danzig , a noted sportswriter forThe New York Times from 1923 through 1967.She was married to Manuel W. Levine, who was the
District Attorney forNassau County, New York from 1959 to 1963, before beginning service as a State Supreme Court judge inMineola, New York . Evelyn Levine died in 1996 inLos Angeles, California .
