- Herbert Raine Curlewis
The Australia Judge Herbert Raine Curlewis was born in Bondi on 22 August 1869 and was educated at
Newington College (1881-1887) [Newington College Register of Past Students 1863-1998 (Syd, 1999) pp46] and studied arts/law at theUniversity of Sydney . On 22 April 1896 he marriedEthel Turner , the author ofSeven Little Australians . As a student Curlewis showed literary talent and in 1906 he wrote The Mirror of Justice, a layman's introduction to the legal process. He was also editor of the Australasian Annual Digest and lectured in law at Sydney University. In 1917 he was appointed a judge of the Industrial Arbitration Court and in 1928 he became a judge of theNSW District Court . Curlewis retired in 1939 and died in 1942.
