Bondi is an Aboriginal word meaning "water breaking over rocks". [Book of Sydney Suburbs, Frances Pollon (Angus and Robertson) 1990] It has been spelt a number of different ways over time, eg Boondi, Bundi, Bundye. The current spelling was accepted in 1827.
