Styrophone

Styrophone

A styrophone is an acoustic device made from Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene foam). There are at least two varieties:

* an acoustic musical instrument
* a type of loudspeaker

The musical instrument consists of a Styrofoam box that is forced to vibrate by friction against a wooden stick. Technically, the instrument is a type of friction idiophone. Styrophones tend to last for only one performance, as the friction destroys the material. ["Frictioned Foam" by Liam Mooney [http://muse.calarts.edu/~lmooney/styrophony.html] ]

The loudspeaker is a cheap home-made variety that consists of a crystal earpiece attached to a cone made from a Styrofoam cup. ["Styrophone Crystal Loud Speaker" from Peebles Originals [http://www.peeblesoriginals.com/crystal-loud-speaker.html] ]
