Haines High School is the primary high school for the town of Haines, Alaska and the Haines Borough School District.

Extracurriculars

Haines High School recently has produced several regional champion boys and girls cross-country teams and the girls team looks to be a perennial state contenders in the upcoming years. Historically, Haines has produced a number of state championship drama, debate, and forensics teams throughout the years, most recent awards include 1st overall in drama for small schools, and coach of the year to Tim Shields. Haines High School's basketball team won the Alaska State Tournament in the 3A division during the 2007-08 school year, making for a first in the history of Haines High School.

Haines is classified as a 3A school by the Alaska School Activities Association, however, since the 3A classification is 100-400 student body enrollment and Haines High School's enrollment has been on a continual drop over the past decade and now sits in the 80s, Haines has the option to move the 2A competitive level (enrollment of 50-100 students), but has so far resisted to attempts to do so ["Chilkat Valley News": [http://www.chilkatvalleynews.com/archive/2004-47-3.html "High school enrollment qualifies for drop to 2A"] . Retrieved January 17, 2007.] . As of 2006, Haines has the smallest enrollment in Southeast Alaska 3A athletic and activities conference.

Current status

Haines High School has recently undergone a major renovation that has combined the town's elementary, middle and high schools. ["Chilkat Valley News": [http://www.chilkatvalleynews.com/story-4.html "Cheer, dance team readies for debut this weekend"] . Retrieved January 17, 2007.] .

The school is also sending roughly 75% of all its graduates on to higher education and less than 10% of the student body drops out [Haines Borough School District: [http://hbsd.net/hbsd/School%20Descriptions.html "About Haines High School"] . Retrieved January 17, 2007.] . Both figures are above statewide averages.

Current K-12 student population is 290, but enrollment is expected to increase by 30 students in the 2007 - 2008 school year.
