subdivision = See text.Archaeogastropoda is (or more accurately was) a
taxonomic order of seasnail s. Archeogastropoda are "primitive" marineprosobranch gastropod mollusk s. They typically have twogill s and usually a double chambered heart. They areherbivore s. Eggs and sperm are discharged directly into the water. This old-style taxonomy of the gastropods, as is found in many older manuals and even on many websites, is based on the classification of Thiele (1925). This classification was not based on true phylogenetic relationships, but on overall similarity between the species.
In the last few years, a new taxonomy of the gastropods has come into common use, and the new taxonomy is strictly cladistic. This has led to an extensive reclassification of gastropod taxa. Archaeogastropoda is a
paraphyletic group, and in strictly cladistic classifications, the occurrence of such groups is no longer accepted. Many of the former Archaeogastropoda are therefore now included in :
*subclassEogastropoda

**SuperorderVetigastropoda Salvini-Plawen, 1989
**SuperorderNeritaemorphi Koken, 1896 (with the order Neritopsina Cox & Knight, 1960).A more detailed classification can be found on
