House of Pucić

House of Pucić

The Pucić or Pozza family were an old noble family from the Republic of Ragusa, with origins in Dalmatia and Italy. The Emperor Leopold I, granted the title of Count and the predicate "Di Zagorie" (of Zagorje - Dalmatian hinterland Fact|date=April 2007) on 20 September 1688 to Mateo (or Matthäus) Pucić/Pozza, son of Lucian Pucić/Pozza and Marija Bunić/Bona. Later, during the national revivalism of the 19th century, some members of the family officially denounced the name "Pozza", preferring to use "Pucić" (see Niko Pucić and Medo Pucić) in recognition of a Slavonic ethnicity. They are considered to be one of the most prestigious families of the Republic of Ragusa.

The Pucić brothers

Medo Pucić and Niko Pucić were two interesting figures in Croatian and Serbian politics in the 19th century; Medo (born Orsatto Pozza) fought for the unification of Dalmatia (then under direct Austrian rule) with the rest of Croatia. Niko Pucić (born Niccolò Pozza) was an important politician and Pan-Slavonic nationalist who controversially claimed that all people (including nominal Croats) speaking the Štokavian dialect, the basis of the future Serbo-croatian language, were actually Serbs, and they were encouraged to unite under common Serbian rule Fact|date=November 2007.
