Andalucia ,Spain . As of 2005, it has a population of 1 398 inhabitants. The village sits at 928 metres above sea level. The name 'Alfarnate' comes from the Arab word 'Al-farnat', meaning flour mill.Alfarnatejo , a neighbouring village, is situated about 3.5km from Alfarnate. The founder of Alfarnate and the founder of Alfarnatejo were originally friends. They both co-founded the area in which the two villages are situated. It was agreed upon that they would both start one village between them. However, a rift was made between the two men when the Alfarnatejo creator wished to marry his cousins ("because they are so attractive"). The Afarnate founder strongly opposed this. As a result, both men went off to create their own separate villages. The people of Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo have remained fierce rivals ever since.
