Barasat Government College

Barasat Government College (BGC) is a state Government-owned college in Barasat of West Bengal state of India. The College was established in 1950 and is affiliated with the West Bengal State University and run by the Government of West Bengal. It was formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta. The college has two "shifts"- Morning and Day. Morning section accommodates the Undergraduate population in Arts and Science, and the Day section is for Honours Undergraduates as well as Postgraduates in Botany.

Overview

The College has a rich history of Art studies with significant quality of teaching by a brand of teachers. Deep impact of knowledge and increse of intelectual perception of students with strong fundamental back ground has been the priorities of teaching. Basic understanding with sincere practical experiences has been the properties of Science studies of this College. Various Undergraduate and a Post graduate department are locally lead by Head of the Department (HOD). The Principal remains supreme of the Adminitrative and the Academic wings for functioning who reports to the Department of Higher Education of the state.

The Post Graduate Department of Botany (PDB@BGC) was established in 2003 under the sucessful leadership of eminent teacher and Scientist in Genetics Dr Anadi Kumar Kundu. He firmly tried to improve the day to day administrative functioning of the College and bring discipline and academic sprit in fellow students, acting against improper and detoriating political interferences. This was a reason that the College became significantly famous for academic and cultural activities during early decade of 21st Century

The College has become a hub of excellence in studying Arts and Science specially the subject of Botany at Molecular Cell Biology level. Students here including from the PG Department of Botany of the Barasat Government College (BGC) has shown in past great intellegence of academic endevor and still performing with high energy of rationale improvement in fundamental studies in Arts and Science. Presently, the College has a single campus with three buildings accommodating all the departments and administrative sections under the dirction of the Principal.

A cultural student community covered under an association of students act in favor of changes to improve over all performance. Presently, manhandaling by local political people of internal affairs of the College, deviating from rules and regulations, for personal vested interests has spoiled the performance as a whole. Still novel indivisual approches are on to bring the performance on excellent track.
