Nova Scotia born, Dr. Lord came to British Columbia before the First World War and was principal of Kelowna Elementary until 1916, when he was appointed an inspector of schools. His inspections included Prince Rupert (then a very large district covering most of northern British Columbia), the Okanagan and Vancouver. He became principal of Vancouver Normal School in 1936 retiring from this position in 1950. From the same period he was a member of the University of British Columbia Senate. He was President of the Canadian Educational Association in 1948-1949. In 1950 he was recipient of the B. A. Fergusson Memorial Award presented by the Federation.
Programs
Dr. A. R. Lord has a Youth Credit Union sponsored by Vancity. Students can sign up for a Junior account, and deposit their money at school during Wednesadays at lunch from 12:15pm- 12:45pm. Grade 6-7 students can be a teller or apply for a board member(CEO, secretary, etc.)for the "Van City Youth Credit Union". The school also has a Chinese school for those who wish to learn Chinese. The school is called "Evergreen Chinese School" and is opened on Fridays after school from 3:30pm -6:00pm. A daily lunch program is also included with many different nutritious meals to serve at 50$ per student a month.
Activities
Peer Helpers are volunteer who help other kids solve their problems during recess and lunch. There is also Student council, where 2 students from each division attend meetings, where they arrange events and they may be needed for help in community events too.If you are in grade 7, you may join the Vancity Youth Credit Union. You'll learn the basics of being a greeter, back cashier, teller, officer, secretary, CEO, treasurer, and more appliable positions.
