Edmonds Community College is a college in the metropolitan area of Seattle. More than 19,000 students annually take courses for credit toward a certificate or degree at the college in Snohomish County, Washington.

History and governance

Established in 1967, and governed by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges, the college is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

The college itself is governed by a board of directors who each serve a five year term and are appointed by the governor of Washington.

Campus setting

The college has a 50 acre campus in Lynnwood, convert|13|mi|km north of Seattle, and beside Edmonds, Washington.

The college has a campus tree walk with 70 or more trees developed with a Community Forestry Assistance Grant provided by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources with support from the USDA Forest Service. Some local high school students participate, either part-time or full-time through Running Start, a state-wide program allowing high school students to enroll and to take up to two years of community college classes tuition-free. High school students may earn an Associate of Arts degree by the time they graduate from their local high school, and continue on to a four-year college or university.

University partners

After two years of study at Edmonds Community College, students may complete a bachelor's degree online at Washington State University online and evenings at the University of Washington or on campus at Central Washington University.

Academics

The college offers the following associate's degree programs, which correspond to the first two years of study at a four-year college or university:Associate of Arts Degree, Associate of Science Degree, Associate in Elementary Education Degree, Associate in Pre-Nursing Degree and the Associate in Applied Science-T Degree (transfers to select universities) in Early Childhood Education, Materials Science, Aerospace Manufacturing, Occupational Safety and Health, and Family Support Studies.

The college has unique Materials science technology degree and Horticultural therapy degree programs.

ervice-Learning

Since 2002, the college has hosted nine full-time AmeriCorps members and provided $250,000 in part-time AmeriCorps education awards to 200 students. Each year an average of 525 service-learning students provide nearly 30,000 hours of service to 57 campus and community partners. These efforts have been recognized nationally with a Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award from Campus Compact and a Service-Learning Collaboration Award from the Community College National Center for Community Engagement.

Research

The college received grants from the National Science Foundation to create a National Resource Center for Materials Technology Education and to study ways to increase the recruitment of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM fields.

Athletics

The college fields seven athletic teams as part of the Northern Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges with volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball and baseball teams. It also has intramural and recreational athletics. There is also a full sized golf course owned by the City of Lynnwood adjacent to the campus. Faimous Harrison is the schools current Athletics Director.

Campus Housing

Student housing has provided students a place to live while they learn at Edmonds Community College. Student housing is mostly noted for its first class Homestay Program, allowing international students the cultural experience of living with a U.S. family. The program is designed to give international students the opportunity to learn, adapt, and experience American culture first hand.

The college's Housing Office also provides on-campus living through its Residence Hall program. Currently, the college leases 1.5 buildings at Somerset Village, and will lease Sophie Courts for the 2008 school year. With both buildings, the Residence Hall program will be able to accommodate 110 students.

In Fall of 2009, the college is slated to open a new four-story on-campus student housing facility named Rainier Place. This new facility will house 181 students while being maintained in conjunction with Lorig Associates Management & Development. Construction began in Summer 2008.

Luke Botzheim is the current Housing Director overseeing Housing operations. Hing Potter is the current Residence Hall Coordinator and Mary Beth Genet is the Homestay Coordinator. The Housing Office Coordinator is Susan Chilcott.

Campus Life

Edmonds Community College provides its students with various outlets for out of class socializing and learning. The Office of Student Life provides students with events and programs to assist in mentoring their social learning as well as academics. OSL also provides a lecture series that brings in public figures to share on various current topics. A popular hang out spot is Mulligan's Cafe.

Currently the school is renovating Brier Hall to accommodated a remodeled Bookstore, Student Life Office, and Culinary Arts department.

Wayne Anthony is the current Student Life Director. Michelle Butler works at the departments Program Coordinator facilitating campus events programs lead by student leaders.
