footnotes =Brian David Ripley (born
April 29 ,1952 ) is a distinguished statistician, professor ofApplied Statistics at theUniversity of Oxford and a Professorial fellow at St Peter's College.Ripley has made important contributions to the fields of
spatial statistics ,pattern recognition , and has been influential in the development of the S and its implementations inS-PLUS and R. Ripley has coauthored 2 books based on S, "Modern Applied Statistics with S" and "S Programming". His work onartificial neural network s (and alsoLeo Breiman 's work in related areas) in the 1990s was highly influential in bringing aspects ofmachine learning anddata mining to statistical audiences.Ripley is a prominent contributor to the R-help mailing list.
He has made important contributions to the theory of
Markov Chain Monte Carlo and, in "Modern Applied Statistics with S" and "Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks" has emphasised the value ofrobust statistics .He was educated at the
University of Cambridge . He has been on the faculties ofImperial College , London and theUniversity of Strathclyde .References
