The station now calls itself "The Greatest Hits of the 60's and 70's", although the station does not play any music from the early to mid-60's. The station, beginning in 2000, began eliminating 1955-1964 oldies from their play lists. The focus is now on 1967-1979 music, with a very limited number of 1965-1966 music and an extremely limited amount of late 1964 music. The station does continue to play artists such as the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Motown artists such as the Supremes, the Temptations, and the Four Tops. Only their late 60's hits are included. Artists such as Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and various other artists frequently played on KONO in the 90's are no longer heard.
Back in the sixties KONO-AM 860, was owned and managed by Jack Roth, who inherited the station from his father, Eugene Roth (Papa Gene). Papa Gene, first licensed KONO-AM in the 40's. It's original format was country & western. In the sixties KONO was one of the leading "top-40" stations in San Antonio, TX for several years. Some of the "on air" personnel were Howard Edwards, Don Couser, Woody Roberts (PD), Bob Green, Bob Pearson and Lee 'Baby' Simms. Their main competition was from KTSA-AM 550. Several of the disc jockeys who worked at KONO in the 1960's won national awards for their popularity and creativity. In 1965, Bob Pearson and Howard Edwards were selected as two of the top radio personalities in the country. KONO was the number one AM station in San Antonio and KITY-FM, its sister station was the top rated FM station, same city. John Walk was program director of KITY-FM, from 1965 until 1968.
